Recap of Summer 2019

Summer is almost gone. Wow.

I mean, I’m more of a fall girl myself, but dang that was fast. I wanted to hop on my blog for a minute and give you guys a little recap of my life these last few months. I realized recently that I only write posts about my feelings/thoughts and I rarely actually talk about what I’m doing - which is really funny to me because I hate reading blogs that are only introspective.

Most of my summer was spent working because, well, #BrokeMusician. I work at a Barre studio here in Nashville. It’s a fun job filled with lots of amazing women. On the days when I wasn’t at my day job, I did a lot of co-writing and playing writers rounds. In Nashville it’s really wonderful that you can get into a routine with music. There’s also a downside to that. I miss playing full shows, the hustle can get exhausting, and sometimes I need to focus on something else for a minute to keep my sanity.

Gotta have a signature “thumb in the photo” picture. Thanks Mom!

Thankfully, I had the opportunity to make a few trips back home - once in June to celebrate my sister’s birthday, then once in July for a family beach trip. I cherished every minute I got to spend with my family. We had the best time spending all day on the beach and eating way too much food. A highlight of my vacation was the day I got to spend with my Mom going to Southport. We ate a delicious lunch (with wine at 11:30am because it’s 5’o clock somewhere!)  on the riverfront, then we went to one of my favorite stores. It felt like old times when I was in high school and I didn’t have any responsibilities. So, if I have any young peeps reading my blog, enjoy the stage of life you are in. I promise one day you are going to miss it.

Best Shrimp and Grits ever!

While we were at the beach we were invited by our friends, Joe and Suzanne, to a low country boil. IT WAS SO GOOD. I had the best time catching up with them and stuffing my face with seafood. Joe gave me a beautiful native american flute. I’m adding it to my list of instruments to learn.

YUM!

Back in TN I decided to get more connected in my church community. Being away from my family takes its toll on me so it’s nice to be needed and known by people here in Franklin. I’ve been helping lead the kid’s worship and started teaching the pre-schoolers. Let me tell you, that has been one of the most unexpected joys in my life. I’ve always loved kids but getting the chance to really be a part of their spiritual growth is a very new and wonderful thing for me.

In between all of the things I’ve already mentioned, I’ve been hanging out with a lot of my friends here in Nashville. I’ve found myself looking back on where I was this time last year and comparing it to where I am now. I was really lonely last year. I had gone through some weird friendships that weren’t making me happy. I remember praying for friends that would take the time to get to know me and care about me. A year later I have a handful of amazing, genuine friends. As much as I don’t mind going to places or events alone, it’s so nice to have people I can call on.

Singing back up for my friend, Justin Love.

One of my best friends, Justin Love, invited me to sing back up for him in a showcase at Sony Music in June. That was a big highlight of my summer. I also got to go into Dark Horse Studios and record some BGVs for a few of his songs (they are SO good guys!). I’ve done a lot of back up singing lately and I absolutely love it! I’m so grateful for the opportunities and the friends I get to experience them with!

Singing at Dark Horse on Justin’s songs. He took this while he was coaching me through a harmony haha.

As if I haven’t been busy enough, any extra free time I have goes into recording demos with Dream Music Group. We’ve been getting together some acoustic demos of my songs and trying to pitch them. Kim is a southern boy so we have had so many funny conversations about southernisms while demoing. I’m so glad no one can hear some of the stuff that we’ve accidenitly recorded ourselves saying. I’m so so so thankful for everything Kim has done for me.

Demoing at Kim’s Studio!

Low point of my summer - I got food poisoning. There was a solid week I was sick in bed. Be careful what you eat guys. I never want to relive that experience.

There ya go! Life update finished. Routine has been my best bud this summer and I am all for it. Since music can be so unpredictable, I’ve learned that I feel my best when I have a few steady things in my life. Even if those steady things aren’t the most exciting news in the world.

Thanks for catching up with me on here. Let me know if you guys have any questions that I can talk about in my next blog! I want to start using this as a way to connect with everyone so leave a comment!

Much love,

xx Carson
